Moment of Trust
Witness students from HTW Dresden's 'Design: Products and Interactions' program falling backward into the arms of their peers, a metaphorical representation of risk, reliance, and vulnerability.
An installation exploring the act of letting go and being caught, embodying the essence of trapeze artists and our daily lives. Slow-motion footage unveils the spectrum of emotions as participants relinquish control, fostering community, connection, and the opportunity to confront fears and build trust.
In the first semester of the master studies at HTWD in „Design: Products and Interactions“ I have worked on a video installation called „Of Falling and Catching“
In the Design Exploration course we tried to approach the topic of Circe Nouveau from a designers perspective. After following numerous ideas about physical objects, lights and interaction I ended up with my first video installation - yea!
I asked my fellow students to be part of the project and I was happy they were open for this little experiment.
The installation is not only about the topic of falling and catching but the process of filming was an interesting experience for all of us individually but also for the community of students in our course, overcoming fear and having trust in each other.
Of Falling and Catching
(video installation, 150 sek., Carl Ahner, 2023)
Trapeze artists do it constantly: they let themselves fall and get caught by others. In a conscious moment of letting go, they relinquish control. They fall for a second in trust, dependency and safety. But falling and catching is not only found in the circus or acrobatics, where this moment of performance makes hearts beat faster; rather, it is an everyday part of our social lives.
Who catches us when we feel like we're losing our footing, when we have no strength or support? Do we have enough security and trust to simply let ourselves fall, out of relaxation or for the thrill of adrenaline? How does it feel to let go of control?
The video installation showcases the students of the Master's program ,Design: Products and Interactions' at HTW Dresden as they fall backward from a table into the arms of their fellow students. The slow-motion footage narrows and widens the focus on that brief moment and makes the spectrum of emotions more visible. The experiment can serve as a metaphorical representation of taking risks, relying on the support of ot-hers, and embracing vulnerability. It can also foster a sense of community and connection among the participants. It can be an impressive experience for both the falling person and those catching them. It offers people an opportunity to confront their fears and learn to trust others.
